It has become our annual tradition for a BIG Money Saturday. This year’s tournament proved to be very energetic, and intense! The numbers were lower than anticipated (56 entries) but the field was stacked…from a PBA Hall of Famer to several who have multiple PBA titles, to local league standouts.
As tournament directors, we pride ourselves on difficult patterns and this proved to be just that. With only one person plus after 5 games of qualifying, the scoring pace was brutal.
Tommy Jones led the field after 5 with a score of 1027, while Randy Weiss was the cut (14th) with a score of 938.
After those 5 games, we reoiled the lanes and came back for 5 games of match play with the final round being a position round.
Tommy never relinquished his lead as he went 4-1 in match play to lead by 70 pins over second going into the final bracket. He was followed by Alex Glinski (3-2), Connor Pickford (3-2), Randy Weiss (3-2), Dustin Davis (2-3), and Nick Johnston (2-3).
Each round produced its own share of intensity. In the bracket match play, Connor Pickford struck out to force Nick Johnston to strike in the 10th for the win…which Nick was able to pull that out. In the next round, two superstars went to battle as 10 frames wasn’t enough for Tommy Jones and Randy Weiss. After an opening spare for Randy, Tommy struck in the 9th frame roll-off, and then proceeded to spare and get a 7 count forcing Randy to mark and get 9 to tie. Randy got 8 on his 10th ball and spared it forcing himself to get 9 for a tie. In one of the purest shots of the day, Weiss put 10 in the pit and advanced for a chance at $2500. Our finals match had out #14 seed vs our #2 seed (Randy Weiss vs Alex Glinski). With Alex struggling to get all 10 back, Randy kept pouring it on and never letting his foot off the gas and winning our third annual BIG Money Saturday for his first Bracket Challenge title and first Bracket Challenge major!
Let’s shoe back tomorrow for our Tournament of Champions event…and our final event of 2023!
